Under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) employers have a duty to minimise the risk of harm by dangerous substances. In many cases, storage of dangerous substances in the workplace is unavoidable and the regulations recommend certain maximum amounts. However, they also recognise that these amounts may be impractical for a variety of reasons and put the onus firmly on the employer to justify what they store and how.
BS EN 14470-1 is a standard that offers a higher degree of protection than the UK legal minimum. It is not just about added peace of mind. Fire is still one of the greatest risks businesses face and if you have a need to store more than the recommended minimum amounts or have a large work area where the aggregate stored in locations around the site would constitute a higher risk, you should really be looking at products with this standard. Some insurance companies are also now asking for dangerous substances to be stored in facilities to a higher standard than the minimum required by UK law.
The aim of a fire safety storage cabinet is to increase the time available to employees to escape an area in the event of an incident, before the dangerous substances stored add their input. They are designed to enclose and shield the contents from the rising temperatures, minimise the release of hazardous vapours and retain spilled chemicals within the cabinet. BS EN 14470-1 tests the cabinet as a whole system, not just the build of its constituent parts. Placed in a furnace, these cabinets will prevent the internal temperature from rising above 180 degrees centigrade for 30 minutes.
These cabinets are made to this exacting standard and carry both GS and CE marking.
